COLOR

I think about color. I think about color often.

Sunrise here.
Sunset there.
The shift and play of colors…

I am sitting up in bed as I write, and before me is an abstract expressionist painting by a friend of my aunt Marcie (Marcia Smith Aron). Marked 1959 and “Floral Growth” on the back, it is tied to memories from my aunt’s house in Berkeley when I was a young child, and later to her San Francisco house. Bright with egg yolk yellows and intense pastels. Mom said the painting had been held by her sister for safe keeping. After my aunt died and the painting came to me, I traced the artist. By then, she lived just a few blocks away from where Gary and I first lived in Big Pink in the U District of Seattle. She had turned to calligraphy, become famous for it. Midori Kono Thiel was sorry to hear my aunt had died, delighted her painting was still alive, but no, she didn’t want it back. So that colorful oil, flush with memory, hangs across from our bed in Portland.

How art travels when we are having fun.

My youngest grandchild’s Christmas sweater.
My older granddaughter made this yarn rainbow. She said she didn’t want me to knit her a sweater, but I keep thinking I might make her one anyway.

A series.
Because color.
Our bed quilt, some of the center panel squares pieced but still unjoined.
Here’s the finished quilt and Midori Kono Thiel’s painting. (The hues lean orange from the lights in this photo and the TV is in the living room now.)

  1. I’m trying to wear more colorful clothes. My grandmother always wore black, and I tend towards that color, also, because it’s so easy. However, I love purples and blues and greens and pinks and have those colors in my closet and especially in my shoe boxes. I’ve recently added two very bright, vibrant scarves that get raves when I wear them. Here’s to more color.

  2. Oh, yes–color. I am moved to wear certain colors each day; you know how that is? I study the racks, finger the pieces tentatively, but it is the right color for the day and its needs, the right comfort or energy that I look for, not a style, usually. I loved all your photos and contrasts. And this spectrum of your color love. And textures of nature and the weavings and all.
