NOW & THEN

Today is the 70th anniversary of the end of the 1950-1953 Korean War, one of the first international conflicts of the Cold War era.

On my walk the other day.

Right there: “Korean War.” It was studiously called a “police action” when I was a girl. No war was declared and we were corrected if we slipped and referred to it as a war.

THROW A SHRIMP ON THE BARBIE

I can’t be the only one sick of hearing about Barbie. I could write about my Barbie doll—the original gifted by my mother; I do not remember asking for one—and how much I disliked her hair and makeup. Instead: weather, birds, writing, and a mountain lion.

It’s been hot in Portland, cool on the coast. The house south of us at the coast sold for 3.3 million and the new owners seem nice. They are the first to actually put a car in the garage in at least twenty years!

In Portland, the new couple on our floor are nice, too. Gary took over from a real estate agent when they were viewing the unit, pitched it hard, and is pleased he made that sale! [No commission.]

We go out for our walks before the sun rises very high because it’s cooler and we are less likely to see people. Gary has always been an early riser and I gave up fighting that a long, long time ago.

WHINING

REMEMBERING ANN

In grade school, I wanted desperately to have a best friend. I knew girls who had piano lessons, dance, modeling, swim classes. I did none of those things. My best First Grade friend moved away and for a long time I had friends, but no one “best.”

That’s a pile of kelp. We haven’t seen much kelp in recent years, surely not a good sign.

INDEPENDENCE DAY

Locals mostly hate the Fourth of July. Too many people, loose dogs, and illegal fireworks going off at all hours. During my run this morning, a dog charged me, barking deeply, and the owner didn’t even apologize. But also a great many brown pelicans, sand all the way around Hug Point, and Gary built a fort. Some bad news, but good food. Education.

There were dozens of brown pelicans onshore in front of our home when we went out about 6:30. We did not approach but took zoomed-in photos. By the time we got home there were people and loose dogs scattered across the beach, and the pelicans had gone off for the day.
