I think about color. I think about color often.

I am sitting up in bed as I write, and before me is an abstract expressionist painting by a friend of my aunt Marcie (Marcia Smith Aron). Marked 1959 and “Floral Growth” on the back, it is tied to memories from my aunt’s house in Berkeley when I was a young child, and later to her San Francisco house. Bright with egg yolk yellows and intense pastels. Mom said the painting had been held by her sister for safe keeping. After my aunt died and the painting came to me, I traced the artist. By then, she lived just a few blocks away from where Gary and I first lived in Big Pink in the U District of Seattle. She had turned to calligraphy, become famous for it. Midori Kono Thiel was sorry to hear my aunt had died, delighted her painting was still alive, but no, she didn’t want it back. So that colorful oil, flush with memory, hangs across from our bed in Portland.
How art travels when we are having fun.

I’m trying to wear more colorful clothes. My grandmother always wore black, and I tend towards that color, also, because it’s so easy. However, I love purples and blues and greens and pinks and have those colors in my closet and especially in my shoe boxes. I’ve recently added two very bright, vibrant scarves that get raves when I wear them. Here’s to more color.

I like wearing most colors, but in college I wore gray early all the time, mixed in with raw silk colors, the occasional spark of brights. But when I look at my much-thinned closet, I see olive/moss greens, coppers reds, and ochre. Black and gray too, which is the colors of my running gear I am wearing now. I have noted “Jan’s new running gear” in my budget for the fall. I hope for brightly patterned tights and jacket.

Absolutely! (Oh, and pinks too. I have always worn dusty pinks.)
So hooray for color!

Oh, yes–color. I am moved to wear certain colors each day; you know how that is? I study the racks, finger the pieces tentatively, but it is the right color for the day and its needs, the right comfort or energy that I look for, not a style, usually. I loved all your photos and contrasts. And this spectrum of your color love. And textures of nature and the weavings and all.
