MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE

The bottled message was dropped the day before about 15 miles north by a couple celebrating their anniversary. The cork had been pushed through, and the neck was plugged with a foiled candy wrapper. We’re sure they would have loved to hear about the finding after a month and from another state, but it made our day!

There was fog this morning, lovely fog and a bit of wind during my run. Yes, I ran. I am running a bit faster than ten minutes miles. My old easy “light run” pace was nine-minute miles, and that might be what muscle memory is giving me now. I thought my knee might be giving me trouble again, but it didn’t. Sore, but not impeded.

It’s been a crazy week, crazy for a number of reasons I will not try to explain. Gorgeous skies. Pelicans fishing right in front of us. Sand sweeping in. And struggling to find out information. Is it because I am old or because I am a fanatical researcher that I sometimes know more about other people’s jobs than they do? It’s been happening for years. Does that happen to anyone else?

Years ago, we applied for a line of credit, and I warned the loan officer that we would need a conservatorship because I’d put our minor son on the title. She said, no, it was not a problem, but then right before interest rates were due to go up, it was a problem and we had to hire an attorney on short notice. (Paid him under the table. More than he’d originally quoted, but there you are. We were seriously pressed.)

In the mean time, the roofers who installed our skylights finally came to see about our leaks (thank you, Jeremy). They determined that the leaking was not the skylights but from roof jacks, and repaired them. The guy who came out said we probably had another ten years on our roof. (The last guy who came out from the same company said the roof needed to be completely replaced. That was three years ago. And it was also this company that worked on the leaking roof jacks three years ago.) In any event, the guy who was here seemed to know what he was doing and we will pay him and hope he’s entirely right about the roof. Gary is tired of moving buckets around in the attic and would like to put the insulation back were it belongs. Gary and I have a bet about the bill. I think it will be twice Gary’s estimate. I’m hoping Gary is right.

The house south of us has been entirely stained off black (very dark burnt umber or what his architect might have described as oil-rubbed bronze?). It’s a handsome color but belongs on a city house. imo But then it is a city house with almost the entire lot covered by house or concrete. Undoubtedly has air conditioning.

When the sun is the color of a tangerine (it was brighter than my camera was able to capture), as it was this morning, that is most often the result of smoke deflecting light. Our most gorgeous sunsets in past years resulted from high smoke drifting south from BC. We have terrible fires in Oregon, but there is no smoke discernible in our air. It is likely higher. One of our sons was seeing th same color to the east in Portland eighty miles away.

Pelicans have been around all summer, sometimes just inside the surfline, sometimes far out nearer the horizon. These birds were right close, fishing in a channel of inside where waves were breaking on a bar.

  1. Here is a list of interesting messages suitable to be put in a bottle:
    • Jesus is coming and not in a good way.
    • Your fly is down, Mr. Gee.
    • No motif, said the frog.
    • Smile, Sean, you’re the one on camera.
    • Teddy Kennedy is dead—who is Teddy Kennedy?
    • Now that the genie is out of the bottle—run!
…and most lastly—never turn your back on the…
