A fine mess
Yeah, this isn’t working for me. I will apologize now for sending two posts in one day. I wish WordPress would not change things. I realize they are trying to make the site more flexible and attractive, but mostly I just want simple. Having to relearn how to do things, even when desirable features are added, is not helpful. Maybe the problem is my operating system (it doesn’t like Macs?) or my browser (Safari), but failing to work properly with whatever the user has chosen is not helpful. So the dark box is somehow related to adding photos. Why?
Every time I tried to directly add a photo, I was kicked off completely off the site. So I added an image box and then the photo, and the site added a black box below again. You probably won’t see it, but it’s darned inconvenient.
Yes, I am typing black on almost-black here.
IMPERFECT PATIENCE

Having worked in the software industry for many years I have a couple observations. Engineers do not want to fix bugs or improve documentation. The “fun and glory” is in adding new features, no matter how useless or unwanted those features may be. What users would like is seeing bugs fixed so applications do not crash and documentation written so that it is possible to figure out how to use products. Once users know how to use something they really do not want to see menus, colors, and layouts changed just because someone in marketing thought that redesigning all the icons would make a product look nice.

Our older son is a software engineer. Lately, he seems to spend most of his time repairing and converting work completed in discontinued programs. Sometimes another person in his department writes code using a system already slated to be phased out in months . . . he finds this wasteful.

Have you tried using only the “Classic” block for a post? It [sort of] replicates a blank post page accommodating both text and images, before WordPress Gutenberg upgrade was completed.

I, too, am wrestling with forced WP changes. Grumble. Grumble. Nothing to add that is helpful. Simply commiserating.
