BIRTHDAY

won’t you celebrate with me

Lucille Clifton – 1936-2010

won’t you celebrate with me
what i have shaped into
a kind of life? i had no model.
born in babylon
both nonwhite and woman
what did i see to be except myself?
i made it up
here on this bridge between
starshine and clay,
my one hand holding tight
my other hand; come celebrate
with me that everyday
something has tried to kill me
and has failed.

  1. Happy Birthday Jan! Thanks for the gift of the sonnet. I’m glad that your computer has returned to you. Fingers crossed that it acted up for them and that they found and really fixed the problem this time.

    • Thank you for your good wishes—I send good wishes back to you too! As best I can tell, they made exactly the same repair as last time according to the paperwork. [I so much appreciate that you read my posts!]
